PACE UNIVERSITY HOSTS “BE A MAN” EVENT TO PROMOTE NON-VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

Leading a new generation of men into a violence-free end zone

PLEASANTVILLE, NY – October 2, 2003 — In the United States a woman is battered by a man – usually an intimate partner – every 15 seconds, raped every two minutes, and murdered by a spouse or boyfriend every six hour.

Free Event: “Be A Man” to encourage men to protect the rights of all
women, your grandmother, mother, sister, daughter,
girlfriend, and friends.

Speaker: Don McPherson, ex-Syracuse quarterback and Philadelphia Eagles
and Houston Oilers pro-football player. He will challenge men
to join other men taking a stand against violence against women.

Day/Time: Thursday, October 9 at 7:30 p.m.

This free event is open to boys and girls, men and women.

Don McPherson’s current national training agenda addresses violence for a gender perspective, examining masculinity and the social pressures placed on men and boys to develop, participate in and sanction violent behavior. McPherson is the executive director of the Adelphi University Sports Leadership Institute, where he works daily with students, athletes, and young men to change the culture that cultivates abuse. He has

served as consultant for the Justice Department’s “Agenda for the Nation on Violence Against Women.” His book, “Throw Like a Girl,” will be released later this year.

The event is sponsored by the Women’s and Gender Studies Department, Athletics, Student Development, Women’s Justice Center, Center for Community Outreach, Lubin School of Business, Dyson College of Arts & Sciences, The Lienhard School of Nursing, The School of Computer Science and Information Systems, The School of Education, Pace Law School, Department for Criminal Justice and University Relations.
