New York Gets New Start-up Lab

Pace University opens up entrepreneurship lab, hoping to incubate interdisciplinary collaboration between students—and create some new companies in Lower Manhattan.

Before they were entrepreneurs, Rob Caucci and Jeremy Pease were students by day and residence hall RAs by night. That meant after classes in Pace University’s Lubin School of Business and computer science program, respectively, then would come home to “have to mediate dozens of conflicts every day between roommates,” Caucci says.

In an effort born of that frustration, the pair launched their first company, a roommate-matching software called Reslutions, which they dubbed “eHarmony for college roommates.” Then, after winning Pace University’s 2010 Pitch Contest with that idea, the pair shifted their plans: They are now looking for a $500,000 investment for their roommate cost-sharing and household management start-up, called SpaceSplitter.

Pace is the latest university trying to foster just this kind of partnership—in which a business school student meets an undergrad programmer and begins a lasting entrepreneurial relationship. On Thursday night, the Lubin School of Business at Pace held a reception launching the school’s new entrepreneurship lab, an open-floor-plan space decked in computers and Idea Paint tucked into a corridor of Lubin School. The secret sauce: any student from any school within Pace may apply. The lab’s director, Bruce Bachenheimer, who also organizes the Pace Business Plan Competition and Pitch Contest, said he’d gotten a call from a nursing students asking if she could apply for the lab, hopefully to find a collaborator for a piece of health-care software or an app.

“Entrepreneurship is interdisciplinary problem solving and no one can be expert at everything; therefore well-coordinated collaboration is at the heart of what we strive to instill in our students,” says Neil Braun, dean of Pace’s Lubin School of Business and former president of NBC and chairman of Viacom Entertainment. “The lab is a conducive space for students, faculty, entrepreneurs and city officials to identify opportunities and needs and build a plan to make something good happen.”

Thursday night attracted other bold-faced New York start-up names, including Harold Levy, managing director of Palm Ventures and former NYC Schools chancellor, and Robert Walsh, New York City Small Business Services commissioner.

“New York is a thriving hub of entrepreneurship, but we’re still in the second and third inning,” compared with Silicon Valley’s thriving technology industry and start-up scene, said Somak Chattopadhyay, a partner in Tribeca Venture Partners, who spoke at the Entrepreneurship Lab launch. “We’ve been missing a critical mass of incubators and accelerators.” —Christine Lagorio

NEWS RELEASE: IT Job Market Maintains its Momentum in Manhattan and Remains Robust in Westchester New Pace Report Shows

The information technology job market continued to gather momentum in Manhattan and remained robust in Westchester County, according to the third quarter Pace/SkillPROOF IT Index Report (PSII), out today.

NEW YORK, NY, October 13, 2010 – The information technology job market continued to gather momentum in Manhattan and remained robust in Westchester County, according to the third quarter Pace/SkillPROOF IT Index Report (PSII), out today.

The index for Manhattan gained another 9 percent over an exceptionally strong second quarter, rising from 110 to 119. “Although the increase is relatively modest, it validates our belief that the recession for IT professionals has ended,” the researchers write. “It is also worth noting that the IT labor market increased substantially over the 3rd quarter of 2009 when it registered 43, an increase of 278 percent!”

The Westchester IT job market appeared to be an anomaly in the third quarter of 2010. Although overall growth declined by 9 percent during the previous three months, ten of the eleven categories that comprise the index exhibited positive growth in the third quarter.

The PSII is a composite index produced by Pace using data from the SkillPROOF company that provides a snapshot of IT job openings at major firms in separate reports for Manhattan and Westchester County. The 11 standard IT job categories are those defined by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Positive signs

Another positive characteristic of the past quarter in Manhattan was that of the eleven standard categories of the index, all but one showed gains, ranging from 32 percent for Computer Scientists, Research to approximately one percent for Other Computer Specialists. In the year-to-year data for Manhattan, nine of the eleven categories of the IT industry had substantial gains, led by Software Engineers, Applications at 303 percent, while two had declines, led by Network Administrators with a decrease of 44 percent. Quarterly comparisons, however, were less dramatic. Of the eleven categories, ten advanced and only one declined. Among the winners, Computer Scientists, Research increased by 31 percent followed by Software Engineers, Applications by 22 percent. Network and Computer Administrators, the only sector that showed declining demand during the second quarter, fell faster and farther in the third quarter, making this sector the poorest performer of the year.

In Westchester, the category of Computer Scientists, Research, which has led the market since the index began gathering data in 2004, dropped by 14 percent. Still, its previous surges mean that on an annual basis the category registered an increase of 224 percent. On the positive side, demand for Systems Analysts increased by more than 400 percent this quarter, followed by IT Managers at 240 percent.

“By many accounts, the recession is over,” said Tom Murphy (MS/CS ’11), VP of IT Infrastructure/UNIX Engineering at Millennium Partners, LP, in a sidebar of the report. “The Dow Jones Industrial Average is about 1300 points higher than a year ago, and, as businesses feel more secure, they will increase hiring. International Data Corporation (IDC) indicated a 5.8% growth rate in IT spending through the end of the year, with government, banking, and manufacturing taking the lead. This should translate into increased employment opportunities in the region.”

Murphy added: “New technological trends create new career opportunities. Indeed.com lists virtualization and cloud computing among its top IT job trends. This year, Gartner reported that 39% of 1587 companies surveyed now allocate resources to cloud computing, with 46% of them planning on increasing their budget next year. For IT professionals this translates specifically into jobs for programmers and systems engineers.”

The information technology job market showed remarkable strength in Manhattan and an impressive increase in Westchester County, according to the second quarter Pace/SkillPROOF IT Index Report (PSII), out today.

New York, NY – July 22, 2010 – The information technology job market showed remarkable strength in Manhattan and an impressive increase in Westchester County, according to the second quarter Pace/SkillPROOF IT Index Report (PSII), out today.

The index for Manhattan surged from 74 to 110, a 47 percent increase which was the largest quarterly gain since the data were first gathered in 2004. “The increase is particularly reassuring because it follows three consecutive quarters of an improving job market, indicating an enduring recovery for Manhattan IT professionals,” the researchers write.

The 24 percent rise in the index reported for Westchester County during the 1st quarter of 2010 was surpassed by an even more impressive increase during the 2nd quarter. The PSII currently stands at 156, up from 106, representing a robust increase of 50 percent for Westchester.

The PSII is a composite index produced by Pace using data from the SkillPROOF company that provides a snapshot of IT job openings at major firms in separate reports for Manhattan and Westchester County. The 11 standard IT job categories are those defined by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The largest contributors to overall growth in Manhattan were IT Managers, at 61 percent, followed closely by Network and Data Communications Analysts, at 60 percent. Categories showing smaller gains include Database Administrators, at 14 percent, and Network Administrators, at a 16 percent increase.

In Westchester, although growth was uneven among the 11 standard IT job categories, the leading occupation was once again Computer Scientists, Research, which increased by more than 53 percent. Following people in that category were Network Administrators at 39 percent and IT Managers at 36 percent. Other categories did not fare as well. Two declined and five remained flat. The poorest showing in the second quarter was in the market for Software Engineers, Systems, which declined by over 40 percent.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY JOB MARKET REMAINS ROBUST IN MANHATTAN AND MAINTAINED POSITIVE MOMENTUM IN WESTCHESTER, NEW PACE U. REPORT FINDS

New York, NY – April 16, 2010 – Job postings for IT professionals showed dramatic growth in Manhattan and increased significantly in Westchester County, according to the first quarter Pace/SkillPROOF IT Index Report (PSII), out today.

“The dramatic growth of the IT industry in Manhattan is a significant sign of overall economic recovery,” the researchers write. “All indicators point to this reversal. Consumer spending and confidence are up, as is the hotel occupancy rate. As pointed out in last quarter’s PSII, employment is a lagging indicator. Employers are always cautious in responding to improved market signs as they want to be sure that the recovery is secure before hiring. That sense of confidence was reached this quarter.

“The gain in Westchester was part and parcel of improving national economic news,” they write. “Although the 160,000 new jobs created in March did not alter the unemployment rate, the increase still can be interpreted positively: As the economy shows signs of sprouting ‘green shoots,’ those who have been sitting on the sidelines during the period of rising unemployment have gained a sense of optimism and are renewing their job searches, thereby offsetting the gains in job creation.”

The 1st quarter index of job openings in Manhattan jumped by 11 points, or over 18 percent, from 63 to 74. This level has not been seen since the 2nd quarter of 2008, when the Great Recession began. This went hand in hand with nationwide gains in hard-hit sectors like manufacturing and construction, as well as with the 162,000 increase in employment reported in March. In Manhattan, the overall 18 percent growth of the PSII was led by a 60 percent increase in demand for Systems Analysts, followed by a greater than 30 percent increase for Computer Programmers. The category of Other Computer Specialists was also up by over 24 percent, a further indication of recovery. Although nine of the 11 IT job market categories showed positive gains, the news was less promising for the remaining two. Demand for Computer Support professionals declined by nearly one percent and that for Database Administrators by over half of one percent.

In Westchester, the PSII increased by more than 24 percent, from 85 to 106, a significant increase. The index went above 100 for the first time since the 3rd quarter of 2008. The Westchester IT job market has maintained positive momentum. After resisting improved economic news during the first two quarters of 2009, it gathered strength during the last two. In the IT sector, the 25 percent growth in the PSII is quite impressive; however, it should be noted that it comes primarily from only two sectors. These are Computer Scientists, Research, registering a 29 percent gain, and Computer Programmers, rising by 19 percent. Software Engineers also showed improvement, ranking a distant 3rd with a 6 percent increase. The remaining categories remained flat or declined. The greatest decline in the Westchester job market was for Computer Support Specialists.

“Business and consumer confidence, market activity, and job creation all increased during the 1st quarter, said Kamal Shah, Vice President of Oppenheimer Funds. “This improved outlook is prompting businesses to gear up and develop new strategies to make themselves more responsive to market changes, and client and shareholder needs with better reporting and information.

“The improved economy also has a direct impact on hiring as the year of retooling has begun. Pace University today announced that to date it has received eight federal stimulus awards totaling $1.8 million to fund research and community projects at its schools of computing, education, nursing, and law. Pace has submitted 32 stimulus proposals, of which we have received eight to date. The eight awards are:

Efficient energy for the environment. New York, NY, January 27, 2010 –– Pace University today announced that to date it has received eight federal stimulus awards totaling $1.8 million to fund research and community projects at its schools of computing, education, nursing, and law. Pace has submitted 32 stimulus proposals, of which we have received eight to date. The eight awards are:

Efficient energy for the environment. An enlarged Northeast Clean Energy Application Center to promote co-generation and other high efficiency, low emission power systems will be the result of the largest grant. The Pace Energy and Climate Center at Pace Law School will share $952,000 from the U.S. Department of Energy with the Center for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy at the University of Massachusetts.

The Northeast region has significant potential for supplying alternative clean energy technologies like combined heat and power generation (“cogeneration”), waste heat recovery systems, and district energy systems. Besides environmental benefits, using less energy and other efficiencies will reduce the dollars flowing out of the region to pay for energy. The center serves New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.

The clean energy center also received $55,027 from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to help with a 2009 conference that identified market based strategies to achieve energy conservation and a cleaner environment.

Relief to NYC Downtown and, Chinatown. Pace’s Community and Volunteer Mobilization AmeriCorps Program received $347,403 through New York State to deepen and broaden its service to needy and vulnerable people in New York City’s Downtown and Chinatown communities. Schools and nonprofit organizations there have been pinched by the economic crisis, and the grant will help place Pace students in after-school programs and as classroom assistants, tutors, college counselors, and instructors in English and US citizenship. The students are recruited for a year of service and learning by Pace’s Dyson Center for Undergraduate Research Experiences, working closely with the Pace Office of Co-op and Career Services.

Collaborative groups for teacher learning. Teaching based on inquiries raised and researched by high school students is increasing in US schools. To help teachers learn this methodology, Pace’s School of Education received $261,870 to partner with four secondary schools it partners with — Pace High School and Millennium High School in New York City, and Peekskill High School and Sleepy Hollow High School in Westchester County. Facilitators from the School of Education are meeting 15 times during the current school year with groups from the schools to develop the schools’ capacity to create, implement and evaluate collaborative groups of their own in which teachers raise inquiries. The project will culminate in a Teaching and Learning Conference for all stakeholders.

The Principal Investigators are Professors Christine Clayton and James Kilbane, cclayton@pace.edu and jkilbane@pace.edu. The funds come through the New York State Education Department Teacher/Leader Quality Partnership Programs.

Mentoring for urban service careers. Pace undergraduate and graduate students who are planning educationally-related urban careers in teaching, psychology, and speech pathology are getting personalized mentoring via a grant of $74,432 through the New York State Education Department to Pace’s Teacher Opportunity Corps. To improve the students’ success and retention, the program is offering personalized tutoring in service learning and instructional technology, and in career-related decision-making in areas like writing academic projects and grant applications, applying for scholarships, and career planning. Qualified participants also get stipends and undergraduate seminar credits.

Expanded nursing scholarships and loans. Pace’s Lienhard School of Nursing received $15,256 (in part from Stimulus funds) from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration to offer scholarships to disadvantaged nursing students. The same agency also awarded the school $52,414 for its Nurse Faculty Loan Program, a loan fund for full and part-time students working toward an MA in Nursing Education. Recipients who complete the program may cancel up to 85% of their NFLP loan if they serve for four consecutive years as a full-time faculty member at a school of nursing.

A New York City entrepreneurship website. Pace’s Seidenberg School of Computer Science and Information Systems and its Pace Web Solutions Development Team received $90,000 to help the New York City Economic Development Corporation create a centralized Web portal for entrepreneurs. The portal will showcase New York as a center of entrepreneurial opportunity and become a go-to site providing information, resources and contact points for start-ups, entrepreneurs and investors of all sizes. The Pace team of technologists, Web developers and entrepreneurs will serve as a consulting group on the portal’s architecture and content, identifying the best available Web technologies.

The Principal Investigator is Professor Jonathan Hill, jhill@pace.edu, with Professors Bruce Bachenheimer and Claudia Green.

Overall assessment

“We are very pleased with the opportunistic faculty members who have taken advantage of the uniqueness of this generous funding to support the University’s many efforts to help stimulate the economy,” said Victor Goldsmith, Associate Provost for Sponsored Research and Economic Development at Pace. “Our students and faculty members are working hard on a variety of projects, and we hope to continue securing additional stimulus funds with them in the current federal fiscal year.”

To date Pace has submitted 32 stimulus proposals, of which 16 are still pending. The process for new stimulus proposal submissions is expected to end in September 2010.

New Pace University Report: Job Postings for IT Professionals Jumped Dramatically in Manhattan, Westchester

Job postings for IT professionals increased dramatically in Manhattan and showed surprising strength in Westchester County, according to the fourth quarter Pace/SkillPROOF IT Index Report (PSII), out today.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY JOB MARKET SHOWS DRAMATIC INCREASE IN MANHATTAN AND SURPRISING STRENGTH IN WESTCHESTER, NEW PACE U. REPORT FINDS

New York, NY – January 21, 2010 – Job postings for IT professionals increased dramatically in Manhattan and showed surprising strength in Westchester County, according to the fourth quarter Pace/SkillPROOF IT Index Report (PSII), out today.

“Our cautious optimism for the 4th quarter was on target,” the researchers write about Manhattan. “As the overall US labor market shed an additional 85,000 jobs in December despite a 4,000 job gain in November, the Pace/SkillPROOF IT Index registered a dramatic 47 percent increase, jumping from 43 to 63. After dropping steadily for the past few years, this increase is certainly a promising indicator.”

The index also jumped dramatically in Westchester County, from 43 to 85, nearly doubling its value. The report says that in the US, “monthly unemployment numbers dropped in November for the first time since the recession began two years ago but failed to hold up in December. However, the local Westchester job market, and the IT job market in particular, fared far better than that of the nation as a whole.”

The PSII is a composite index produced by Pace using data from the SkillPROOF company that provides a snapshot of IT job openings at major firms in separate reports for Manhattan and Westchester County. The 11 standard IT job categories are those defined by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

In Manhattan, the phenomenal increase was widespread across the 11 job categories with the exception of Network and Computer Administrators, the only sector that declined. The most active sector was Software Engineers, Applications, with a 102 percent increase over the 3rd quarter, followed by Systems Analysts with 56 percent and Computer Support with 49 percent.

In Westchester, although the index increased impressively, the increase did not distribute itself evenly throughout all 11 industry categories. Only five showed signs of improvement while one remained flat and five declined slightly. On the positive side, the phenomenal improvement was primarily the result of strong demand in two job categories, Computer Programmers and Computer Scientists, Research. For the former, job postings increased by over 130 percent; for the latter by 110 percent. Of the remaining categories, the index showed improvement in demand for Software Engineers, Applications; IT Managers; and Systems Analysts. The greatest decline in demand was for Network Administrators.

“Technology can help cut costs during a downtrend and drive a business during a recovery,” said Sunil M. Verma, PhD, VP Information Technology, Macy*s, and Chief Information Officer, CIOs Without Borders. “During the last year we’ve seen non-IT companies increasingly turn to technology to streamline their operations.

“In the 4th quarter there also seemed to be resurgence in IT investing to drive market share increases. Cloud computing appears to be keeping the demand for database experts and Web developers strong; recognition of the power of social media and internal knowledge sharing has resulted in increased budgets in corporate marketing and communications departments; and the demand for developers with portal or smart phone application experience is high. “It is still a buyers’ market and companies are looking for innovative IT professionals with technical skills, communication abilities and a willingness to learn the business.”
