Pace University / SkillPROOF partnership receives IBM Faculty Award
for using Natural Language Processing technology
to track US job trends and skills requirements

WHITE PLAINS, NY, June 12, 2007 – Susan M. Merritt, dean of Pace University’s Seidenberg School of Computer Science and Information Systems, has received a Faculty Award from IBM. The award will enable Pace University and SkillPROOF, Inc, the creators of a new quarterly index of major companies’ demand for IT specialists in Manhattan and Westchester County, New York, to expand their research into other job markets and locations.

The index of IT employment trends that the partners developed — the Pace/SkillPROOF IT Job Index, or PSII – was announced in November and is available at It tracks and weights actual on-line job postings of firms in the areas it covers, providing a guide to students, educators, and human resources executives.

Unstructured text. The IBM Faculty Award also comes with technology support from IBM’s T. J. Watson Research Center. It will encourage SkillPROOF, a private firm specializing in job market research, to assume a leadership role in applying technologies like deep Web mining and Natural Language Processing (NLP) to labor market research as SkillPROOF uses the latest computer based techniques for interpreting and categorizing large volumes of unstructured text.

“We need to find and research the job requirement trends of employers locally and nationwide to offer a better understanding of their needs, and to help support career planning and decision making of students and professionals,” said Henning Seip, President of SkillPROOF Inc. “IBM’s cutting edge NLP technology will help us analyze job descriptions on a large scale and find answers about the future of the job market.”

Broadening training for widening needs. Pace University and SkillPROOF have been partnering in the development of regional labor market statistics for nearly two years. According to Merritt, who oversaw development of the index, their PSII “helps students target their career training, helps jobseekers target their searches, and helps human resources officers gauge emerging needs for skills and anticipate areas where high demand will raise salaries.”

Though the PSII is only a few months old, says Kevin Faughnan, IBM’s Director of Academic Initiatives, it “clearly demonstrates the market need for technology-related skills in the NY metropolitan area, and indeed nationwide.”

Faughnan added: “Progressive higher education institutions like Pace have faculty members who recognize this need, and are offering more interdisciplinary education whereby students learn to harness the power of information technology to business challenges in industries like banking, insurance, media, communications, government and health care. As the need for these skills increases, the value of an education in Information Systems and technology is rising.”

The partners. The PSII was developed and is calculated by Farrokh Hormozi, PhD, professor of economics and public administration in Pace University’s Dyson College of Arts and Sciences, and is based on labor market data provided by Seip of SkillPROOF, Inc. The index is produced under the auspices of Pace’s Seidenberg School of Computer Science and Information Systems.
